We’ve just released a short film to promote the launch of the A4 sketchbooks we designed for the Design Museum. The film documents ‘Enter the Grid’, a drawing workshop by The Design Museum to celebrate Wim Crouwel – A graphic odyssey. Also featuring a presentation by Tony Brook on Crouwel’s grid system.

Xmas is rubbish, and everyone knows it. Not Christmas – Christmas is fantastic. I’m talking about the word Xmas – it’s awful. It feels negative, cheap, tacky… It is short, and that is in its favour, but other than that, no-one likes it. If you use it, I judge you, and you go down in my estimation.

So the creative minds at KentLyons have given Xmas a rebrand. We present to you:

Gone is the negative X, replaced with a positive plus symbol. It suggests moreness, indulgence, getting together, making things bigger and better. It evokes the need to get a bigger tree, have more people round, eat and drink more… all the good things about Christmas. It loses some of the religiosity of Xmas, which in a multi-faith, secular society can only be a good thing, and it nods to what Christmas is much more aligned to – consumerism. It also sounds better phonetically (“plusmas” or “addmas” instead of “exmas”).

So this year, if you’re in a hurry, or short of space, use +mas instead of Xmas. It’s much nicer.

Merry +mas!

As part of our campaign for Macmillan’s Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning, we’ve created an iPhone app to help you find the nearest decent cup of coffee near you. It’s completely free, and features the top 10% of the UK’s coffee shops. It’s got an Augmented Reality view so you can hold your phone up and walk to find a great cup of coffee.

You can download the app from iTunes here.

For those poor souls without an iphone, it looks like this:

Users can show their appreciation by donating the cost of a decent cup of coffee (£3) via text. Text “cafe” to 70123 – every donation is hugely appreciated, and will help Macmillan’s work to support people affected by cancer.

LV= were attending the MoneyFacts awards last Friday (they won 2!) and they asked us to help raise their profile. So we Micketed™ the event. We created some placards encouraging the attendees to be as excellent and independent as possible. And then a bunch of us stood around all the entrances to the event like very positive Golf Sale advertisers. Quite a nice way to get noticed… if a little chilly.

After two and half years in the making we have finally launched our book Pulp–Paper. The book is a joint project with Generation Press, GF Smith and James Cropper Paper Mill.

The project started life as a question to GF Smith: “Can we see how your paper is made?”. After that point it seemed to take on a life of its own and has become a 128 page book documenting the process of making paper and discussing our continued and changing relationship with it.

The book contains a wide variety of stocks produced at the mill in the Lake District and features a section of pulp sheet mounted to the front cover.
A special Smoke/Generation Barry duplexed slipcase was produced for the books given out on the night.

Paper Making In SE1
We invited the mill’s colour technician Barrie Forrest (one of the only men in the country to have a shade of Colorplan named after him) to come and show everyone how they make and colour paper in the colour lab before it is produced on a large scale. Once the beer had been flowing a few of us tried our hands at it to varying success.

You can watch a video of the evening here.
You can see the book in more detail on our site.

Enjoy, and thanks to everyone that has worked on the book and came to launch party.

We’ve launched the new Glastonbury festival site for the BBC. Based on the new Global Visual Language for BBC sites, the site will grow over the next few weeks, ending with the festival itself, which will feature a live feed for the streaming video content. It is going to be the best way to experience the festival without getting your boots muddy.
